Expanded dental benefit to be made available to those with heart disease

Highmark Inc.'s dental subsidiary United Concordia will make a richer dental benefit available to members with heart disease and those who've suffered a stroke, the company said.

The benefit, which pays 100 percent of the cost of periodontal surgery needed to treat gum disease, is being offered to company health plans after a study commissioned by the dental company found that good oral health can reduce overall health care spending.

Dental Care Saves Diabetics Thousands in Healthcare Costs!

Diabetics who receive regular dental care and treatment for gum disease spent an average of $1,477 less per year on prescription drugs than diabetics who don't see dentists, an insurance industry study found. Highmark Inc. subsidiary United Concordia Dental on Wednesday released results of the study, which examined claims records of 1.7 million patients with United Concordia dental insurance and Highmark medical insurance.

Study findings indicated that, of the 26.0% of children and 24.1% of adults who did not have contact with a general health care provider in 2008, a sizeable proportion (34.7% of these children and 23.1% of these adults) did visit a dental practice that year.
